What is on the TOEFL Test?

The TOEFL test measures your ability to use and understand English at the university level. The entire test is taken in one session and lasts approximately 2 hours.

You can retake the test as many times as you wish.


1. Reading

  • Time: 35 Minutes
  • Questions: 20
  • What you do: Read passages from academic texts and answer questions.
  • What it measures: Your ability to understand and analyze written English.

2. Listening

  • Time: 36 Minutes
  • Questions: 28
  • What you do: Listen to lectures, classroom discussions, and conversations, then answer questions.
  • What it measures: Your ability to understand spoken English as used in academic settings.

3. Speaking

  • Time: 16 Minutes
  • Tasks: 4
  • What you do: Speak into a microphone about familiar topics and discuss material you have read and listened to.
  • What it measures: Your ability to express your ideas effectively in English.

4. Writing

  • What it measures: Your ability to write in a clear and well-organized way for academic coursework.
  • Time: 29 Minutes
  • Tasks: 2
  • What you do: Write essay responses based on reading and listening tasks, supporting an opinion in writing.

When can I take the TOEFL test

  • The TOEFL iBT® test offers exceptional flexibility, with over 60 test dates available each year.
  • Plan ahead and register early to secure your preferred date and testing location.
  • Tests are typically held every Saturday, with additional sessions on Sundays throughout the year.
  • Registration closes 7 days before your chosen test date.

TOEFL Test Fees & Policies in Kenya

Standard Registration Fee: KES 29,950

Registration Deadlines:

  • Standard Registration: Closes 7 days before the test date.
  • Late Registration: Available until 2 days before the test for an additional KES 12,000 fee.

Rescheduling (Changing Your Test Date):

  • Must be done at least 4 full days before your original test date.
  • The rescheduling fee is KES 10,700.

Cancellation & Refunds:

  • If you cancel on time, you will receive a refund of 50% of the original test fee, minus a KES 1,500 processing fee.
  • To cancel, you must notify us at least 4 full days in advance.

TOEFL® Identification (ID) Requirements

Your ID is your ticket to the test center. To be admitted, your identification document must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Must be original (no photocopies, digital copies, or photos on a phone).
  • Must be government-issued and recognized by your country of citizenship.
  • Must be valid (expired documents are not accepted).
  • The name must exactly match the name you used to register (excluding accents).
  • Must include a recent, recognizable photograph.
  • Must include your signature (the name must match the one on your registration).

Your TOEFL® iBT Results

Getting Your Scores

  • Availability: Your results are typically ready to view online just 4 days after your test date.
  • Notification: We’ll send you an email as soon as your scores are available in your ETS account.
  • Access: Simply log in to your account and click “View Scores”.
  • Official Report: A downloadable PDF score report is available within 8 days.

Important Details

  • Validity: Your TOEFL scores are valid for two years. We highly recommend you download and save your PDF score report immediately.
  • Sending Scores: The test fee includes 4 free score reports to institutions you select before the test.
    • Electronic Scores can arrive as early as 6 days after your test
    • All Scores are sent out approximately 11 days after your test.
  • Adding Recipients Later: Need to send scores to more places? You can order additional reports for a fee of KES 5,000 per institution.
